The pullouts that have marred the Rogers Cup women's event in recent years have continued, with Wimbledon champion Venus Williams withdrawing with a knee injury.
Fortunately for the Montreal event, world No. 1 and French Open champion Ana Ivanovic, No. 2 Jelena Jankovic and No. 3 Maria Sharapova will help compensate for the absence of No. 7-ranked Williams.
Ivanovic and Sharapova are already in Montreal, and Jankovic will arrive after she finishes at this week's WTA Tour event in Los Angeles.
As a result of yesterday's draw, 45th-ranked Aleksandra Wozniak of Blainville, Que., will start against No. 71 Chan Yung-Jan of Taipei, with the winner to met Jankovic, who has a first-round bye.
Also entered are Canadian wild cards Stéphanie Dubois of Laval, Que., Sharon Fichman of Toronto and Marie-Ève Pelletier of Repentigny, Que.
