Canada's Aleksandra Wozniak forced Lindsay Davenport to a fifth match point before finally falling 6-4, 6-2 against the American in the first round of the U.S. Open Monday.
Wozniak, ranked 40th, was only a month removed from the first title of her career, but proved unable to get over the three-time Grand Slam champion.
The 20-year-old from Blainville, Que, remains without a victory at the Open in two appearances and stands 0-2 lifetime against the 32-year-old Davenport.
The Canadian was plagued by seven double-faults in the 74-minute loss. Despite converting on two of three break points, Wozniak lost her own serve five times and committed a costly 23 unforced errors.
Davenport, who has been troubled by knee injuries which kept her from the Beijing Olympics, began with a break in the opening game before a run of four consecutive breaks of serve midway through.
The American claimed the set as Wozniak returned long, then picked up her pace with an early break in the second.
But the Wozniak went down fighting, saving four match points off of Davenport errors before finally bowing out when the American landed a volley winner into the open court.
