Markus Rosenberg scored two goals and visiting Werder Bremen beat German champion Bayern Munich 5-2.
Bremen also got goals from Naldo, Mesut Ozli and Claudio Pizarro, before Tim Borowski replied twice for twice in the final 18 minutes.
Both teams are tied at eight points, three behind Schalke, which edged 10-man Eintracht Frankfurt 1-0 at home. Frankfurt's Chris received a red card in the 34th and teammate Patrick Ochs scored an own-goal seven minutes later.
Second place Hamburger SV (10 points) plays at Wolfsburg in one of three Sunday matches.
Italy
Atalanta's perfect start to the Serie A campaign ended in a 1-0 loss at Catania.
Michele Paolucci became the first player to score against Atalanta this season in the 59th minute. Atalanta won its opening two games and entered the match tied for the league lead with Lazio.
Now Catania, Atalanta and Lazio are tied with six points apiece. Torino, Inter Milan, Napoli and Juventus are next with four points each.
France
Ederson's successful penalty helped seven-time defending champion Lyon beat lowly Le Havre 1-0 and maintain its unbeaten start to the French league on Saturday.
The Brazilian midfielder converted from the spot in the 45th minute after defender Nicolas Gillet fouled striker Frederic Piquionne, who was starting in place of top scorer Karim Benzema.
Lyon's fifth win of the season moved it onto 16 points after six rounds.
Marseille can move to within two points if it beats Monaco on Sunday.
Benzema, who had a late goal for Lyon in a 2-2 draw with Fiorentina in a Champions League match on Wednesday, started on the bench but came on for Piquionne after 57 minutes. Benzema nearly scored a spectacular solo goal after dribbling past three Le Havre defenders, only to lose control of the ball just before shooting.
Lyon finished the match with 10 men when winger Sidney Govou was sent off in the 66th for a second yellow card.
"We really wanted to get the three points after the Fiorentina match," Lyon midfielder Jean II Makoun said. "After Sidney got sent off, we were down to 10 men but we showed a lot of character to get through. A lot of people have been talking about our defence, but tonight we were solid. It's a good thing not to have conceded a goal."
In Saturday's other matches, it was: Grenoble 0, Bordeaux 1; Lille 3, Auxerre 2; Lorient 1, Caen 1; Toulouse 2, Sochaux 1; Nantes 2, Valenciennes 0, and Nice 2, Le Mans 2.
Bordeaux, which was thumped 4-0 by Chelsea in the Champions League on Tuesday, got a late win thanks to Brazilian Jussie's 80th-minute goal. But Bordeaux coach Laurent Blanc will lose two key players to suspension after Alou Diarra and Wendel were both sent off.
Toulouse striker Andre-Pierre Gignac, Nantes forward Mamadou Bagayoko, and Lille's Tulio De Melo all scored twice to help their teams to victory.
Julien Quercia also grabbed two to put Auxerre ahead 2-1 after 80 minutes, but 17-year-old Belgian striker Eden Hazard equalized for Lille in the 88th, and then De Melo struck the winner in the fourth minute of injury time.
Rafik Saifi's 34th-minute goal seemed to put Lorient on the way to a home win, only for Anthony Deroin to equalize for Caen in the 84th.
At Nice, Emerse Fae and Loic Remy put the home side 2-0 ahead after 28 minutes, but an own goal from Nice midfielder David Hellebuyck got Le Mans back in the match in the 49th, and substitute Roland Lamah equalized in the 86th with his first goal for the club since joining from Roda JC.
In Sunday's other games, Nancy hosts Rennes, and Saint-Etienne plays Paris Saint-Germain.
Spain
Sergio Aguero scored his fourth goal in a week to set Atletico Madrid on its way to a 4-0 win over Recreativo Huelva in the Spanish league on Saturday.
Florent Sinama-Pongolle added two more goals and Maniche got the other in a victory that lifted Atletico to six points. Early leader Espanyol also had six points but hosted Getafe later in the day.
Aguero, left completely alone by Recreativo's defence, took just eight minutes of the game at Vicente Calderon Stadium to continue his prolific form when he headed in the first goal from Simao Sabrosa's floated free kick. The Argentina striker netted twice in Atletico's 3-0 Champions League win over PSV Eindhoven on Tuesday and scored his team's consolation goal in its 2-1 loss at Valladolid last weekend.
Aguero then had a second goal disallowed 16 minutes later, before Recreativo went on the attack and subjected Atletico to several nervous moments before halftime.
But Atletico doubled its lead in the 53rd when Portugal midfielder Maniche drilled the ball home after Recreativo had failed to clear a corner.
Sinama-Pongolle, who joined Atletico from Recreativo in the off-season, ended his former club's hopes with the third goal in the 78th, the French forward sidefooting home following a forceful run by Atletico substitute Miguel De Las Cuevas.
Sinama-Pongolle scored again in the 89th when he beat Recreativo defender Cesar Arzo before calmly stroking the ball home to provide Atletico with a repeat of the 4-0 win over Malaga in its opening home game three weeks ago.
On Sunday, defending champions Real Madrid will seek their second win of the season on a visit to Racing Santander, while FC Barcelona aims to improve on its worst league start for 35 years when it travels to promoted Sporting Gijon.
Other games are: Deportivo La Coruna versus Mallorca; Almeria versus Malaga; Valencia versus Osasuna; Real Betis versus Sevilla; Numancia versus Villarreal; and Athletic Bilbao versus Valladolid.
