Leafs' Hollweg suspended

Globe and Mail Update

Toronto Maple Leafs forward Ryan Hollweg has been automatically suspended for the first two games of the regular season.

The suspension is a result of being assessed a third game misconduct for checking from behind within 41 games.

Hollweg hit St. Louis Blues defenceman Jay McKee from behind with 1:38 remaining in the third period of Toronto's 7-3 loss to the Blues in St. Louis last Wednesday. He was also involved in two fights and racked up 39 minutes in penalties in the game. He was also given game misconducts last season while a member of the New York Rangers for hits from behind in games against the Edmonton Oilers on Jan. 5 and against the Montreal Canadiens on Feb. 3.

The Leafs acquired Hollweg from the Rangers in July in exchange for a fifth round draft pick.

Hollweg, who is still competing for a roster spot with the Leafs, will be ineligible to play in Thursday's opener in Detroit against the Red Wings and Saturday's home opener against the Canadiens.
