Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Jose Reyes lays down a sacrifice buntFrank Gunn/The Canadian Press

The Toronto Blue Jays have placed shortstop Jose Reyes on the 15-day disabled list with a cracked rib.

The 31-year-old has been attempting to play through the injury since Toronto's game against the Orioles back on April 10. After sitting out the series against the Atlanta Braves, Reyes returned and the switch-hitter attempted to bat exclusively right handed to try and minimize the injury's impact. However, Reyes has just three hits in 23 appearances with five strikeouts since his return to the lineup.

Following Toronto's 6-5 loss to the Boston Red Sox on Monday night, the Blue Jays announced they had purchased the contract of infielder Jonathan Diaz from Triple-A Buffalo, who filled in for Reyes last spring when he went on the disabled list with a hamstring strain.

Diaz, who was batting just .178 in 16 games in the minors, will likely split infield duties with Ryan Goins at shortstop.
