The Toronto Blue Jays placed Canadian third baseman Brett Lawrie on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday with a left ankle sprain.
The move was backdated to Tuesday, a day after he was injured while sliding into second base in Toronto’s 9-3 win over the Atlanta Braves at Rogers Centre.
Lawrie, from Langley, B.C., stayed in the game after the play but was visibly hobbled while advancing to third base later in the inning and had to be replaced by a pinch-runner.
Lawrie is batting .209 this season with five home runs and 14 RBIs.
The Blue Jays also formally announced that right-hander Thad Weber was optioned to triple-A Buffalo and right-hander Ramon Ortiz was designated for assignment.
The team also recalled right-hander Todd Redmond, selected the contracts of right-hander Neil Wagner and left-hander Juan Perez from the Bisons and designated first baseman Clint Robinson for assignment.
