Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Sergio Santos has cleared waivers and will be assigned to the club's Triple-A affiliate in Buffalo.

The team designated the 31-year-old reliever for assignment on Monday with the hope that a minor-league stint will help him return to major-league form.

Other teams had until Wednesday to claim him off waivers but his $3.75-million salary may have discouraged them.

Santos also hadn't been helping the Blue Jays much lately, giving up five earned runs on seven hits in 2 1/3 innings over his last four appearances. He issued four walks in that time.
