The Toronto Blue Jays have re-signed American League MVP Josh Donaldson to a two-year deal worth approximately $29-million (U.S.), according to a team source.

Donaldson was in the midst of an arbitration struggle with the Jays. He had requested $11.8-million. Toronto countered with $11.35-million.

The move gives the Jays some salary certainty over the next two years, and sets the table for a much larger deal after that. Donaldson is not eligible to become a free agent through the 2018 season. Given his trajectory, he would likely become one of the highest paid players in the game at that point.

The Jays are in the midst of a sizable performance window. For 2016, they've retained all the key parts to what was the best offence in the major leagues last year.

Donaldson, 30, is the cornerstone of that. In his first season in Toronto, he established himself as arguably the best infielder in baseball.

Though it's a lot of money, $14.5-million per annum is a bargain price relative to the current baseball economy.

Now the Jays must decide if they're willing to re-up with two other members of their core – Jose Bautista and Edwin Encarnacion.

Editor's Note: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated Josh Donaldson's age as 28. It also incorrectly stated the year he is eligible to become a free agent. This version has been corrected.
