Nobody can explain why Drew Hutchison has fared so well at home and struggled so mightily on the road this season pitching for the Toronto Blue Jays.

Whatever the reason, his continued struggles away from Rogers Centre is becoming a serious area of concern for the American League club.

Hutchison was rocked once again on the road Friday night as Detroit rung him up for seven runs on 10 hits over 4.2 innings in an 8-6 Tigers victory here at Comerica Park.

The loss dropped Hutchison's record to 8-2 on the season, which on its own doesn't appear that bad.

Dig a bit deeper, however, and the disconcerting numbers all show that Hutchison is a much more effective pitcher at home than he is on the road.

Pitching at Rogers Centre in Toronto, Hutchison has a 6-1 record with a 2.12 earned run average. At home this year he averages just over six innings per start.

On the road it is a far different story.

Although his road record is not too jarring at 2-1, the other numbers are just downright ugly. In nine games away from home Hutchison is averaging about five innings per start and his ERA is an even nine.

"There's no confidence issues, there's none of that, no outlying stories," Hutchison insisted after Friday's latest setback "I just need to be better, it's that simple."

The Toronto defence did no favors for Hutchison in this one, booting the ball around for three errors, two of them throwing miscues by leftfielder Ezequiel Carrera in the five-run Tigers fourth that put them in front 6-0.

"We were uncharacteristically sloppy out there tonight with some of the throws, we didn't back up and things like that," said Toronto manager John Gibbons. "And you never know, if that doesn't happen what the difference in runs scored is going to be.

"That was unusual for us. We haven't seen that all year."
