Baltimore Orioles third baseman Manny Machado goes down with a knee injuryJoy R. Absalon

Orioles third baseman Manny Machado has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained right knee ligament.

The injury occurred Monday night in Baltimore's game against the New York Yankees. Machado took an awkward swing and crumpled in the batter's box, clutching his knee.

An MRI on Tuesday revealed the sprained ligament, and the Orioles placed the 2013 All-Star on the disabled list before Wednesday's series finale against New York.

Machado was batting .278 with 12 home runs before the injury and was in the midst of his best stretch of the season. Since returning from a five-game suspension at the start of July, Machado is batting .351 with five home runs.

The 22-year-old tore his left ACL in September of last year and missed the entire first month of the season.

Baltimore has purchased the contract of infielder Cord Phelps from Triple-A Norfolk. The team cleared room for Phelps on the 40-man roster by moving catcher Matt Wieters to the 60-day disabled list.

Chris Davis started at third base for the Orioles on Wednesday. He replaced Machado on Monday and has 74 games of major league experience at the position.
