Russell Martin was a notable absence from the Toronto Blue Jays starting lineup on Friday for the start of a critical weekend series against the Boston Red Sox.
The veteran catcher tweaked his left knee during Wednesday’s game against the New York Yankees and was replaced by a pinch hitter in the ninth inning.
The Blue Jays had hoped that, after Thursday’s day off, Martin would have enough time to rest the knee and be able to play Friday night at Rogers Centre.
But when the starting lineup was posted outside the Blue Jays clubhouse earlier on Friday, Dioner Navarro was pencilled in to catch Toronto starter Marco Estrada.
“It’s still pretty sore so we’ll see … if he’s ready for tomorrow,” Jays manager John Gibbons said of the ailing catcher.
Martin was not spotted before the game in the Toronto clubhouse nor was he on the field during batting practice.Report Typo/Error
