R.A. Dickey forgot to follow one of the basic tenets that is drilled into baseball players from the time they start playing in the little leagues: keep your eye on the ball.
The Toronto Blue Jays starter experienced a scary experience during batting practice here at Tropicana Field on Wednesday when he was struck in the temple by a line drive off the bat of Tampa Bay Rays slugger Evan Longoria.
Dickey was playing catch and was deep down the left field line foul line when the accident occurred and initial indications are that he was unhurt.
According to one eyewitness, the Toronto pitcher did not fall to the ground after getting struck but afterward took a knee as he was attended to.
Dickey then made his way into the Blue Jays clubhouse and remained there while they took batting practice.
A club spokesman said that Dickey confirmed getting hit and that there was nothing else to say.
