The Montreal Alouettes have reached into the past to find their new defensive co-ordinator.

Jeff Reinebold, who hasn't worked in the CFL in 14 years, has been hired by the Als to run their defence. The former Winnipeg Blue Bombers' head coach replaces Tim Tibesar, who recently left Montreal to become the defensive co-ordinator at Purdue University.

During his time in Winnipeg, Reinebold was known as much for his counter-culture, motorcycle-riding ways as for losing. The Bombers opened the 1998 season with a 10-game winless streak with the unproven T.J. Rubley at quarterback. The team finished with a 3-15 record and Reinebold was let go.

Since Winnipeg, the 54-year-old surf fan from South Bend, Ind., has coached throughout the U.S. and was a receivers' coach at Southern Methodist University in 2011. Two years ago, he was diagnosed with skin cancer and underwent treatments.
