Toronto running back Cory Boyd scored two short-yardage touchdowns as the Argonauts defeated the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 29-24 in CFL pre-season action Wednesday night.
Boyd scored from one and two yards out in the first half while Gerald Riggs and Jessie Hubbard each added touchdown catches.
Hamilton quarterback Henry Burris and receivers Chris Williams and Simon Charbonneau-Campeau each scored for the Ticats.
Toronto and Hamilton entered the game with brand new veteran starting quarterbacks — old Western Division rivals Ricky Ray for the Argos and Burris for the Ticats.
Ray had been traded from Edmonton in December while Burris was traded from Calgary in January.
Ray started the game for Toronto and led two touchdown drives in a little more than one quarter’s work, finishing with five completions on eight pass attempts for 49 yards.
Burris entered the game for Hamilton in the second quarter and matched Ray with two TD drives. He scored one touchdown, hit Williams for a 75-yard score, was intercepted in the end zone and recorded one fumble. He completed seven of 15 pass attempts for 214 yards in one quarter’s work.
In all, eight quarterbacks saw action — four on each side.
Toronto kicker Anthony Alix missed his lone field-goal attempt, from 32 yards. Hamilton kicker Luca Congi hit one of two attempts, scoring from 24 yards and missing from 45. His 24-yarder gave Hamilton a 17-15 lead at halftime.
Rookie Toronto pivot Trevor Harris began Toronto’s third quarter and engineered a 75-yard scoring drive, hitting Riggs for a 20-yard TD and a 22-17 lead.
Quarterback Zach Collaros, in a battle with Harris for third spot on the roster, rushed 32 yards to set up a 13-yard TD strike to Hubbard and the 29-17 lead.
Rookie Hamilton pivot Dan LeFevour then hit rookie receiver Charbonneau-Campeau with a 21-yard TD strike with 2:05 left in the game to pull within 29-24.
