Buffalo Bills running back C.J. Spiller is comforted as he is carted off the field during the first half of an NFL football game against the Minnesota Vikings Oct. 19 in Orchard Park, N.Y.Bill Wippert/The Associated Press

Buffalo Bills starting running backs Fred Jackson and C.J. Spiller were carted off the field about 10 minutes apart in the first half of their game against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday.

Jackson hurt his groin in the final seconds of the first quarter. Spiller hurt his left shoulder at the end of a 53-yard run up the left sideline with 5:49 left in the second quarter.

The Bills announced that both players will not return.

The injuries depleted Buffalo's backfield to third-string running back Anthony Dixon and fullback Frank Summers. Running back Bryce Brown was inactive to start the game.

Jackson was hurt while rushing up the middle for no gain on a third-and-1. He immediately grabbed the inside of his left leg as he was on the field.

Jackson required help getting up and had difficulty moving his legs while being helped to the sideline by centre Eric Wood and a trainer. He then had his head in his hands while being carted off.

Spiller was hurt as he fell hard to the turf after being tripped up from behind by safety Robert Blanton.

Spiller was in immediate pain as he rolled over on the left sideline. A towel was placed over Spiller's head as he was carefully loaded onto the cart.

Vikings starting centre John Sullivan is out after sustaining a concussion. Guard Vladimir Ducasse's return is questionable after hurting his knee.
