Ellis (Skip) Prince responds to questions after being introduced as the news president of the Montreal Alouettes back in 2002PAUL CHIASSON/The Canadian Press

The CFL commissioner's job intrigues Skip Prince.

The former Montreal Alouettes' executive says he recently reached out to CFL board chairman Jim Lawson about the position after being urged to do so but has yet to hear back.

Lawson heads up the committee mandated with finding a replacement for Mark Cohon, who'll step down as CFL commissioner Jan. 9.

Lawson will serve as interim commissioner upon Cohon's departure and is hoping Cohon's successor will be in place by April.

Prince, 61, worked as a consultant with the league before serving as Montreal's president and chief executive officer from 2002-'03 and says he's always had an affection for the CFL and Canadian football.

Prince is currently the principal of The Prince Companies, which provides consulting services in the sports and entertainment industries, and says he's not actively looking for a new job.

In August, Prince completed his tenure as the senior associate director of athletics at the University of Texas following a six-year stint as president and commissioner of the United States Hockey League.

Prior to joining the Alouettes, Prince spent nine years as a vice-president with the NHL (1991-2000) and also served as a vice-president for the parent company of the L.A. Kings.

Prince also helped develop and syndicate the Arena Football League in 1986, serving as its head of business and legal affairs before a stint as interim commissioner.

Prince attended Yale, where he played football and basketball before graduating in '74. He's also a graduate of the University of Virginia School of Law.
