Rene Paredes was flawless on all six field goal attempts and Nik Lewis caught for 121 yards, including a touchdown, as the Calgary Stampeders beat the Saskatchewan Roughriders 33-31 in CFL pre-season action Friday.
Paredes' final field goal, from a game-high 42 yards, came with no time remaining and gave the Stampeders a perfect 2-0 record to conclude the pre-season.
J.T. O'Sullivan, Saskatchewan's third-string quarterback, connected with Ismael Bamba on a desperation third-down throw late in the fourth quarter to force Paredes' game-winning kick. But an illegal kickoff by Saskatchewan (0-2) gave Calgary the field position it needed to capitalize.
The final exhibition game for both teams was a kickers' showcase through most of the first half, with the first 16 points scored by field goal or single.
Calgary punter Rob Maver opened the scoring on the game's opening drive when Roughriders defensive back Tristan Jackson conceded a 52-yard punt single.
Paredes gave Calgary a 7-0 lead with two of his three first-half field goals before Saskatchewan got on the board with a 28-yard Chris Milo field goal. Paredes and Milo then traded field goals of 21 and 32 yards, before Roughriders rookie running back Kory Sheets ran 13 yards for the game's first touchdown.
A late hit from the Roughriders' Lance Frazier didn't slow Lewis, who caught a 14-yard pass from Drew Tate on the next play to put Calgary up 17-13 at the half.
One of Chris Getzlaf's six catches, from four yards out, opened the second-half scoring on a TD toss from Riders backup QB Drew Willy.
But Calgary's Matt Walter scored on a four-yard run less than two minutes later, and Paredes added field goals of 29 and 40 yards to keep the Stamps in the game. Milo was held to a 55-yard punt single and 52-yard field goal in the second half.
Both teams used three quarterbacks in the game. Tate was 13-for-21 for 174 yards for Calgary with a touchdown and an interception. Kevin Glenn went 7-for-9 and Bo Levi Mitchell was 3-for-5 in relief.
The Riders started Darian Durant, who completed nine of 12 throws for 92 yards and a touchdown. Willy entered the game in the second half and went 9-for-12 for 96 yards, while O'Sullivan was 5-for-10 for 70 yards.
Saskatchewan opens its 2012 regular season June 29 in Hamilton against the Tiger-Cats while Calgary opens at home July 1 against the Montreal Alouettes.
