Brooke Henderson

Team Canada sits in second place after one round of the inaugural World Junior Girls Golf Championship.

The Canadian squad, led by world number one Brooke Henderson, carded a combined score of even par 144 at Angus Glen Golf Club in Markham, Ont. on Sunday. Henderson of Smiths Falls, Ont., shot 2-under par while teammate Grace St. Germain of Ottawa carded a round of 2-over par. Naomi Ko of Victoria shot a non-counting 5-over 77.

"It was little bit slow to start, I wasn't hitting the ball quite as good as I would have liked to," said Henderson, who earlier this year finished runner-up at the U.S. Women's Amateur and was the low individual at the recent World Amateur Team Championship. "Throughout the round I started to get a bit more comfortable. The last couple of holes I was playing my best golf; three birdies in the last four or five holes so I'm happy with that."

The United States, led by Megan Khang (67) and Mika Liu (70) lead the way at 7-under par 137. Khang had one bogey and six birdies – including on her final four holes – to pace the American attack.

Khang leads the individual leaderboard by three strokes over Henderson and Liu.

Finland sits alone in third followed by Italy and Spain.

The second Canadian team in the event, comprised of Jaclyn Lee of Calgary (72), Selena Costabile of Thornhill, Ont. (78) and Alisha Lau of Richmond, B.C. (83) sit in a tie for eighth place.

Angus Glen Golf Club is hosting the World Junior Girls Golf Championship as a test event for the golf competition at next year's 2015 Pan Am Games.
