Lydia Ko won the Evian Championship on Sunday to become the youngest major champion in LPGA Tour history.

The South Korean-born New Zealander closed with an eight-under 63 for a six-stroke victory over Lexi Thompson at the final major of the season.

Ko is 18 years 4 months 20 days. She eclipsed the record set by American Morgan Pressel at 18 years 10 months 9 days in the 2007 Kraft Nabisco Championship.

Ko finished at 16-under 268 for her fourth victory of the year and ninth on the tour. Thompson shot a 70.

China's Shanshan Feng was third at eight under after a 70. South Korea's Lee Mi-hyang, the third-round leader, finished with a 74 to drop into a tie for fourth with compatriot Ilhee Lee (70) at seven under.

Ko has been setting records even before she turned professional two years ago.

Tipped as a future great of the game, she was already the youngest winner on the Tour after her win at the Canadian Women's Open in 2012, and the youngest player of either gender to reach the No. 1 spot when she did it earlier this year.

"Everyone won't be asking me when I'll win my first major because it's done," said Ko, who was two shots off the pace heading into the final round.
