Vancouver - Joe Panzeri of Meridian, Ida., outlasted two others in a two-hole playoff at Point Grey Golf and Country Club on Monday to earn an exemption into the 2011 RBC Canadian Open.
The first year pro shot 4-under 68 along with Stuart Anderson of Sooke, B.C. and fellow American Michael Jensen of California. The trio proceeded to the par-5 12th for a playoff, where Anderson was eliminated. On the second playoff hole, the par-4 11th, Panzeri birdied to secure the invitation to Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club, where the Canadian Open will be played next month.
"I had a bogey free round, made a lot of good saves and got shots to drop but I didn't think 4-under would be a qualifying score," said Panzeri. "It's my first year as a pro, playing on the Canadian Tour and I'm really excited to play in my first PGA Tour event."
Jensen and Anderson will be among 19 other golfers who earned the right play their way into the National Open Championship in the final Monday qualifier of tournament week.
While those three were busy playing for a spot in the Canadian Open, eight others were battling in a separate playoff to be among the final seven of 21 players eligible for the final qualifier.
A second regional qualifier will be held next Monday at The Club at Bond Head in Bond Head, Ont.
Final qualifying is scheduled for Monday, July 18 at Morgan Creek Golf Course in Surrey, B.C., where four final spots will be awarded.
