A Saskatoon jazz singer quickly apologized on social media for her rendition of The Star-Spangled Banner in Saturday's Memorial Cup hockey game between the Portland Winterhawks and Halifax Mooseheads.

Performer Alexis Normand slipped up on the third line of the United States anthem when instead of singing "whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight" she belted out the lyrics "Those broad stripes and bright stars, at the dawn's early light."

"I'm embarrassed and deeply sorry. I wish I'd had more time to learn the American anthem," Normand tweeted immediately after the gaffe, which drew chuckles and some groans from the crowd at the Credit Union Centre.

It's not the first time an anthem performer has caused an uproar at the Canadian Hockey League's championship tournament.

Controversy erupted last year in Shawinigan, Que., when singer Jean-Francois Bastien revealed a political message on his shirt criticizing Prime Minister Stephen Harper's government during his performance. After the incident, Bastien was dropped from future performances at the tournament.
