Boston Bruins winger Brad Marchand will face a phone hearing Monday for his hit on Vancouver Canucks defenceman Sami Salo on Saturday, the league announced Sunday.
Marchand was given a five-minute major penalty for clipping and game misconduct after colliding with Salo's knee during the hit in the second period, which forced Salo to the ice, hard. He did not return.
The hit was legal, Marchand told reporters, adding he was trying to avoid his own hit when he upended Salo down low.
"I did go under him," Marchand told reporters. "But I felt the base contact was about his hip point. That's usually a pretty legal hit from what I've seen in the past. I have no idea how the league feels about it. I guess we'll see."
Marchand has faced previous discipline this season, including a two-game suspension and a $2,500 fine for separate incidents.
