The Montreal Canadiens have signed free-agent forward Manny Malhotra.

The veteran centre's agent says he has signed a one-year deal worth $850,000.

The 34-year-old Malhotra, who has come back from a career-threatening eye injury suffered in 2011, recorded seven goals and six assists in 69 games with the Carolina Hurricanes last season.

The Malhotra deal comes a day after the Habs traded veteran forward Daniel Briere to the Colorado Avalanche.

The Habs were busy on the first day of free agency as they also signed defenceman Tom Gilbert to a two-year agreement, inked defenceman Mike Weaver to a one-year deal and traded blue-liner Josh Gorges to Buffalo for a 2016 second-round draft pick.
