The Vancouver Canucks have acquired forward Brandon Sutter from the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Canucks also receive a third round pick in exchange for forward Nick Bonino, defenceman Adam Clendening and a second round pick in 2016.

Vancouver's third round selection will be the earlier of the two currently held by the Penguins.

"Brandon Sutter is a good two-way player. He's a matchup guy," Canucks general manager Jim Benning said on a conference call. "He brings us speed to the middle of the ice and I think it solidifies our centre ice (position)."

Sutter had 21 goals and 33 points in 80 games with the Penguins last season. He is entering the final year of a deal that will pay him $3.3-million.

Vancouver becomes Sutter's third NHL stop since being drafted in the first round by the Carolina Hurricanes in 2007. He joined the Penguins in 2012 trade that sent Jordan Staal to the Hurricanes.

"We looked at all the teams in our division and they all improved from the end of the season to now," said Benning. "I think doing this move, it makes our team deeper and it gives us a better chance to compete with the teams in our division and our conference."

Bonino spent just one season with Vancouver after being acquired from Anaheim in the Ryan Kesler trade while Clendening played just 17 games with the Canucks after being acquired from the Chicago Blackhawks back in January.
