The NHL will hold its first-ever all-star draft on Friday night. Here's a look at how it works:
Time: 8 p.m.-9:30 p.m., live on TSN.
Captains: Eric Staal will do the picking for Team Staal with the help of alternates Ryan Kesler and Martin St. Louis; Nicklas Lidstrom chooses Team Lidstrom with alternates Mike Green and Patrick Kane.
Format: 18 rounds, alternating picks back and forth.
Flip-flop: A coin flip decides who selects first.
Restrictions: Each team must draft three goaltenders by the end of the 10th round and five defencemen by the end of the 15th round.
Last man standing: NHL vice-president Brendan Shanahan came up with the new format and originally envisioned a group of players being selected in the last round. But the players demanded that one man be left standing. The format dictates that it will be a forward.
