Tournament favourites Boston and Montreal each won their opening games as the four-team Clarkson Cup women's hockey tournament kicked off Wednesday.

Montreal started its quest for a third straight Canadian women's hockey league with a 5-0 rout of the Brampton Thunder. Catherine Ward led the Stars offensively with three assists.

Dominique Thibeault, Haley Irwin, Carolyne Prevost, Emmanuelle Blais and Ann-Sophie Bettez scored for Montreal, while Charline Labonte made 25 saves.

Florence Schelling stopped 32 shots for Brampton.

Earlier, the Boston Blades, Montreal's chief rival and the top team in the regular season, edged the Toronto Furies 3-2 on Gigi Marvin's game-winning power-play goal with 45 seconds remaining in regulation.

Kate Buesser scored the other two goals for Boston, which swept the six-game series with Toronto during the CWHL's regular season.

Amber Bowman and Natalie Spooner replied for Toronto.

Toronto faces Montreal on Thursday, while Boston faces Brampton.
