The Calgary Flames selected left-winger Sven Baertschi with the 13th pick in the NHL draft Friday.

The Swiss-born Baertschi was the Western Hockey League rookie of the year last season. He led all first-year players with 34 goals and 51 assists in 66 games for the Portland Winterhawks.

The five-foot-10, 181-pound Baertschi also ranked first among WHL rookies in playoff scoring and was tied for second overall with 27 points (10-17) in 21 games.

Baertschi had a goal and an assist for Switzerland at the 2011 world junior hockey championship.

He had been rated as the seventh North American skater by NHL Central Scouting.

Calgary missed the playoffs last season, finishing 10th in the Western Conference with a 41-29-12 record.
