Ian White found out on Thursday morning that he was slated to play forward against the Detroit Red Wings on Friday.
The defenceman, who hasn't played forward since he was eight years old, was solid alongside centre Matt Stajan and left wing Alex Steen. Stajan and Steen always seem to play well together, but it was White who forced a turnover for a Steen goal in the second period. He also caused a couple penalties, including a double-minor for highsticking by Detroit's Tomas Kopecky in the first period.
“I thought he had a terrific game,” said Steen, whose Leafs dropped a 5-3 decision.
Leafs coach Ron Wilson believes he has a couple defenceman who can play forward when needed, but refused to elaborate on who else may get the call.
Even though White has played the past three seasons for the Leafs, he's not a lock to make the roster. This may be a way for him to stick around.
“The transition was easier than I thought,” he said. “They volunteered me. I do as I'm told. Apparently, tomorrow I'm strapping on the pads [and playing goal].
“I have no idea what they have cookin' up. But I'll play wherever they need me.”
