Mirtle: Training camp tryouts

Globe and Mail Blog Post

A quick update on the NHL players who are on training camp tryouts across the league:

Glen Metropolit, Boston - Has impressed so far and the Bruins dealt Mark Mowers to Anaheim on Monday, something that may free up a roster spot for him

Krystofer Kolanos, Calgary - A no-show for his AHL reassignment after he failed to show much at Flames' camp

Jassen Cullimore, Detroit - Not likely to make team given competition

Aaron Downey, Detroit - Still competing with Mark Hartigan for the final forward spot

Brent Sopel, Detroit - May make Wings as seventh defenceman

Barry Brust, Minnesota - Was reassigned to Houston (AHL) last week

Bryan Berard, N.Y. Islanders - Has a relationship with new Isles assistant coach Gerard Gallant and the team needs someone to fill Tom Poti's spot on the power play. Still battling a few youngsters for the spot

Mark Smith, N.Y. Rangers - Still in the mix for a depth role

Jim Dowd, Philadelphia - Has been on the shelf with back spasms, unable to practice, and will likely be passed on the depth chart by some of the younger talent

Rory Fitzpatrick, Philadelphia - Has a rib injury and is expected to miss a week of action. No word on his 2008 all-star game eligibility

Adam Hall, Pittsburgh - Has been tested in a plum role in recent exhibition games

Sandis Ozolinsh, San Jose - One of seven hopefuls vying for a final spot on defence, but because he is part of the substance abuse program, he cannot sign a contract until Oct. 10. Ozolinsh, 35, is also apparently willing to begin the season in the minors

Mike Johnson and David Tanabe, St. Louis - Both are in tough given the glut of players still fighting for spots but are still in the mix

Bryan Muir, Toronto - May catch on with the Marlies as a mentor type
