Maki: What to do next time

Globe and Mail Blog Post

Here’s a quick thought on what should happen if another Philadelphia Flyers’ player is suspended for a hit to the head: suspend the coach, John Stevens.

Give him some out time and fine the Flyers organization, too.

Either the Flyers have no control over their players or they’re keen on bringing in street thugs disguised as hockey players (for the uniformed that would be Jesse Boulerice, who has been hit with a 25-game suspension, and Steve Downie, who is serving a 20-game suspension, both for throwing head shots).

Either way, the Flyers are culpable, no matter what Stevens says about not wanting that sort of stuff in the game.

So if it happens a third time, take out the coach. Make him sit at home for 20 games; make him think about his role in ensuring his players follow the rules and play hockey, instead of mugging the opposition.
