Well that didn't take long. Only a couple of hours after Montreal Canadiens coach Guy Carbonneau said character winger Steve Begin is a Hab "for the time being," the 30-year-old has been shipped to the Dallas Stars in exchange for farm-hand Doug Janik.

Begin has been a healthy scratch in the Habs' last five games, and said on Wednesday he hoped that if he wasn't in the Habs' plans, that general-manager Bob Gainey would try and find him another team before the trade deadline.

And so it is that Gainey has shipped Begin to his and Carbonneau's former team.

"Throughout his five seasons in the Montreal Canadiens' jersey Steve Bégin has been a proud competitor who dedicated himself to the team. As an organization, we are grateful to Steve for his play on the ice as well as his involvement in the Quebec community. We wish Steve the very best with the Dallas Stars," a club statement said.

Janik, a 28-year-old defenceman, has played only 13 games for the Stars this year and has been assigned to the Canadiens' minor-league affiliate in Hamilton.

In 42 games with the Habs, Begin potted six goals and added four assists, along with 27 penalty minutes.
