No one should be surprised if there are young goaltenders in Sweden now running for the fjords screaming, "Hjalp! Help. Save me from Mike Keenan." This would be in response to the Swedish Ice Hockey Federation's decision to hire Iron Mike as a senior advisor. As part of his new job, Keenan will oversee the development of young players and coaches, which is why there are now so many Swedish goalies wanting to play forward. Remember how Keenan manhandled his goalies while coaching in the National Hockey League? Eddie Belfour already had one foot on the dark side but Keenan shoved him over the edge. One minute, Eddie would be playing; the next he'd be skating off towards the bench, where he'd proceed to smash his goal stick and slam his equipment around as if he were a two-year-old in mid-tantrum. It made for great fun to watch but let's be honest: Keenan never met a goalie he couldn't bend, spindle or mutilate. Give ole Iron Mike 48 hours and he'd turn the New York Rangers' Henrik Lundqvist into a babbling fool. The most even-tempered Swedish goalie of all-time was Tommy Salo, who is now the head coach of Kungalvs IK, a club team in Sweden's tier III league. Can you imagine what Keenan would have done to Salo after he gave up a goal on that long slap shot in the 2002 Winter Olympics against Belarus? Keenan would have had Salo on the bench before the goal light came on. Then he would have sent home to Surahammer between periods. Then he would have traded him to the Chicago Blackhawks. No wonder those poor young Swedish goalies are running away faster than a startled reindeer. Mike Keenan has just moved in and he's looking for a goaltender to yank.
