Mike Comrie retires from hockey

Globe and Mail Update

Mike Comrie has retired from hockey following career-ending hip surgery.

The Edmonton-born centre, who began his NHL career with the Oilers, announced his retirement Monday after undergoing hip resurfacing surgery two weeks ago.

Comrie was both loved and loathed in Edmonton, where he scored 22 points in his first 41 games with the team followed by a 33-goal outburst in his second season, 2001-2002. A contract dispute with Edmonton general manager Kevin Lowe led to Comrie being traded to the Philadelphia Flyers. Comrie, the son of businessman Bill Comrie, was subsequently booed by fans every time he returned to Edmonton.
