After a win that even some of Toronto Maple Leafs’ biggest fans were doubting, the team is playing a seventh game in the playoffs Monday night. They’ll be in Boston facing the Bruins to finish a series that Toronto fans have been anticipating for nine years.
There’s support everywhere – people are dressing their dogs, their kids, their houses up to reflect their excitement. And they’re tweeting their fan loyalty in big numbers.
So who has the more active fan base on social media? Toronto or Boston?
In the past week, chatter online about the Leafs has consistently been higher than that about the Bruins. On May 12, there were 76,131 tweets mentioning the Bruins, versus a whopping 190,694 mentions of the Leafs. The most retweeted tweet for both teams Monday was a post from astronaut Chris Hadfield, accompanied by a photo of Boston snapped from space: “Tonight's Finale: Boston, you're a beautiful harbor city. Hope your Bruins play a memorable game tonight vs the Leafs.”
There biggest spike in Twitter chatter about the teams came last night at 10:20 p.m., just as Game 6 ended – there were 37,194 mentions of the Leafs and just 11,186 of the Bruins.
