Toronto Maple Leafs Petter Granberg is hit by Philadelphia Flyers Zac Rinaldo during first period NHL pre-season action, Monday September 22, 2014 in London, Ont.The Canadian Press

The Toronto Maple Leafs trimmed six players from its training camp roster Monday, assigning forwards Petri Kontiola and Sam Carrick, defenceman Petter Granberg and goaltender Antoine Bibeau to the Toronto Marlies.

The team also put forward Troy Bodie on waivers for the purpose of assignment to the Marlies and announced that  defenceman Henrik Tallinder, who suffered a shoulder injury in Friday night's game in Buffalo, has been released from his professional tryout contract.

The team also returned injured non-roster players Rinat Valiev and Frederik Gauthier to their junior teams. Toronto now has 29 players - 18 forwards, nine defencemen and two goaltenders - left in camp.

Kontiola, a former Chicago Blackhawks draft pick (a seventh rounder in 2004), was thought to be in the mix at the start of camp to make the team as a depth centre. The Leafs were one a number of teams who chased Kontiola in the offseason. He bought his own way out of the Kontinental Hockey League, deciding to return to the NHL after solid stints with Metallurg Magnitogorsk and Chelyabinsk Traktor.

Swedish prospect Granberg was competing for what looked like a single open spot on the blueline as the seventh defenceman, but a recent injury to Cody Franson could change that equation. Outside of the locks to make the team - Dion Phaneuf, Morgan Rielly, Roman Polak, Jake Gardiner and Stephane Robidas - the Leafs still have defencemen Korbinian Holzer, Viktor Loov and Stuart Percy in camp.
