With two players affected by a suspected bout of food poisoning, the Toronto Maple Leafs are going to the rare step of using an emergency recall to bring up 19-year-old junior star Nazem Kadri from the London Knights for Monday night's game.
Leafs senior advisor Cliff Fletcher announced the move on AM640 radio a little more than an hour before Toronto's home game against the San Jose Sharks.
The two Leafs expected to miss the game are rookie Christian Hanson and Fredrik Sjostrom.
After to a slow start this season, Kadri has emerged as one of the Ontario Hockey League's top scorers this season with 66 points in 42 games, ninth best in the league. Kadri has 38 points in his last 18 games.
Part of the reason Kadri is the call-up likely stems from the fact the team's minor-league affiliate, the Toronto Marlies, are playing in Abbotsford, B.C., Monday night and bringing players up in time for the NHL game may not have been possible. It had been rumoured earlier in the day that enforcer Andre Deveaux would be the player called up.
