The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed defenceman Paul Ranger to a one-year contract.

Ranger, 28, recorded eight goals and 17 assists in 51 games with the AHL's Marlies last season.

In 270 regular-season games with the Tampa Bay Lightning from 2005 to 2009, registered had 18 goals, 74 assists with 218 penalty minutes.

The 6-3, 210-pound native of Whitby, Ont., was selected 183rd overall by Tampa in the 2002 draft.

Meanwhile, the Leafs also announced that video analyst Chris Dennis has been promoted to assistant coach.
