Mark Scheifele scored with 20 seconds left in overtime to give the Winnipeg Jets a 2-1 victory over the Washington Capital on Saturday.

The victory halted Washington's season-high, six-game winning streak.

Defenceman Jacob Trouba sent a pass from behind the net to Scheifele, who fired the puck past goaltender Braden Holtby on the glove side.

Washington head coach Barry Trotz challenged the goal for Jets forward Blake Wheeler being offside, but it stood.

Playing in his third NHL game, Jets rookie Connor Hellebuyck made 37 saves to remain undefeated.

Holtby had his career-high, eight-game winning streak end. He stopped 34 of the 36 shots he faced.

Captain Andrew Ladd scored on the power play for Winnipeg (13-12-2).

Nicklas Backstrom also scored with the man advantage for Washington (18-5-2).

Ladd scored his eighth goal of the season with seven seconds left in the first during Winnipeg's fourth power play of the period.

A Dustin Byfuglien long shot bounced off the boards behind the Capitals' net to Bryan Little at the bottom of the faceoff circle. Little passed the puck to Ladd in the middle of the circle and he fired a one-timer high on Holtby's glove side.

A minute earlier, skaters had paired up for some fighting after Scheifele was kneed by forward Michael Latta.

Winnipeg outshot Washington 17-6 in the first period.

Backstrom got help from a screen to score his ninth goal of the season at 14:25 of the second period on the power play. He now has 10 points in his last nine games, including three goals.

The Jets held a 25-20 lead on shots on goal after the middle frame and were 1-for-5 on the power play. The Caps were 1-for-4.

A Byfuglien shot hit the crossbar midway through the third period, while Caps forward T.J. Oshie's backhand shot toward an open net was nixed when Hellebuyck got a piece of his stick on it.

Winnipeg led 34-32 on shots on goal after regulation time.

Winnipeg heads to Chicago for a Sunday afternoon game. Michael Hutchinson, who's 4-0-1 against the Blackhawks, is expected to start in net.

The Capitals ended a three-game road trip that included victories in Montreal and Toronto. They host Detroit on Tuesday.
