Decision Day: Canadian teams make final roster moves Add to ...

We’re rounding up roster news from around the National Hockey League today as teams make their final cuts ahead of the regular season.

Vancouver Canucks: President and general manager Mike Gillis announced Friday that the Canucks have sent eight players to the Chicago Wolves of the AHL: Peter Andersson, Darren Archibald, Joe Cannata, Kevin Connauton, Andrew Gordon, Derek Joslin, Anton Rodin and Bill Sweatt.

Winnipeg Jets: The Winnipeg Jets announced Friday afternoon they have re-assigned three players - Maxime Macenauer, Spencer Machacek and Derek Meech - to the St. John’s IceCaps of the American Hockey League.

Calgary Flames: From Eric Duhatschek: The Calgary Flames' roster moves appear to be coming in stages. This morning, they announced they have reduced their roster to 26 players by reassigning Paul Bryon (C) and Brett Carson (D) to the Abbotsford Heat (AHL) while Henrik Karlsson (G) has been designated for assignment but remains with the team. The Flames have two goalies, nine defencemen and 15 forwards remaining in camp, including two players - forward Steve Begin and defenceman Steve McCarthy - on professional tryout offers (PTOs). Further lineup decisions need to come by the end of the day and will largely revolve around whether one or the other or both crack the 23-man roster. Update: The Flames have signed tryout player Steve Begin to a one-year, two-way contract worth a prorated $525,000.

Montreal Canadiens: Sean Gordon reports rookies Alex Galchenyuk and Brendan Gallagher as well as veteran Mike Blunden will start the NHL season with the Montreal Canadiens. Forwards Michael Bournival, Gabriel Dumont, Louis Leblanc and Patrick Holland and defencemen Mike Commodore, Frederic St-Denis and Jarred Tinordi were returned to the AHL Hamilton Bulldogs.

Edmonton Oilers: The Oilers called up goalie Yann Denis from Oklahoma City on Thursday because veteran Nikolai Khabibulin is still recovering from hip surgery. Sent down to the AHL were forward Chris VandeVelde and defencemen Taylor Fedun and Colten Teubert. On Friday the team put Khabibulin on injured reserve.

Ottawa Senators: The Ottawa Senators reduced their training camp roster by two players Thursday, assigning defenceman Cody Ceci to the Ontario Hockey League’s Owen Sound Attack, and re-assigning forward Mike Hoffman to the Binghamton Senators of the American Hockey League.

Toronto Maple Leafs: James Mirtle reports that defenceman Morgan Rielly and forward Matt Frattin were the final two cuts at training camp Friday morning. He also filed a look the tough decisions facing head coach Randy Carlyle as the season begins.
