Edmonton Oilers goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin has bid farewell to Arizona's Tent City jail and bolted for freedom.

The 38-year-old was released early Saturday morning after spending 15 days in jail for an extreme drunk driving conviction. The incident occurred last year when Khabibulin was pulled over by Scottsdale police driving his Ferrari at almost 50 kilometres an hour above the posted limit.

His blood-alcohol level was .0164, more than twice the legal limit.

Initially, Khabibulin appealed his 30-day sentence then changed his mind in order to serve his time before the Oilers opened training camp next month. He will spend the next 15 days under house arrest sporting an ankle monitor. He was also fined $1,500 (U.S.) and must complete an alcohol education program.

Tent City was built 18 years ago from U.S. Army surplus tents and is home to 1,600 inmates. Prisoners must conform to a number of rules, such as no long hair and no cell phones, cigarettes or coffee. Some inmates are forced to wear pink underwear because the white ones were being sold for cash.

There was no confirmation Khabibulin had to don pink briefs during his stay at Tent City.
