RANGERS 3, BRUINS 2

BOSTON — Marian Gaborik scored twice, the second on a third-try backhander with 3.6 seconds left in overtime, and the New York Rangers beat the Boston Bruins 3-2 on Saturday in a matchup of the top two teams in the Eastern Conference.

Henrik Lundqvist made 32 saves for the Rangers. Ryan Callahan also scored for the Rangers, who lead the East with 64 points.

Tuukka Rask stopped 30 shots for the Bruins, who played most of the overtime down a man, 4-on-3, after Andrew Ference drew a five-minute major for driving defenceman Ryan McDonagh into the boards and was ejected.

Ference scored his fourth goal of the season and second in two games for the Bruins.

RED WINGS 3, BLUE JACKETS 2, SO

DETROIT (AP) — Valtteri Filppula scored in the fourth round of a shootout to give Detroit its 16th straight home victory,

The streak tied Detroit with the 1975-76 Boston Bruins for the fourth-longest run at home in NHL history.

Niklas Kronwall and Nicklas Lidstrom scored for the Red Wings in regulation, and Jimmy Howard made 17 saves. Ryan Russell and Nikita Nikitin scored for Columbus, and Curtis Sanford stopped 29 shots.

The teams traded power-play goals in the second period.

BLUES 4, SABRES 2

ST. LOUIS (AP) — David Backes had two goals and two assists, and Jaroslav Halak made 19 saves to lift St. Louis over Buffalo.

The Blues are 8-0-1 in January, earning 17 of 18 points, and Halak is 11-0-3 in his past 14 starts.

St. Louis is an NHL-best 21-3-3 at home and has 64 points overall, one fewer than Western Conference-leading Detroit.

Buffalo, which dropped its 12th straight on the road and fifth in a row overall, is 2-7-1 in January.

B.J. Crombeen and David Perron also scored for the Blues, and Alex Pietrangelo and T.J. Oshie each added two assists for St. Louis.

Ryan Miller made 23 saves for Buffalo, which got goals from Mike Weber and Tyler Myers. Weber's goal snapped Halak's shutout streak at 164 minutes, 38 seconds.

FLYERS 4, DEVILS 1

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Scott Hartnell scored two power-play goals, and Wayne Simmonds had a goal and two assists, leading Philadelphia over New Jersey.

The Flyers (28-14-4) remained four points behind the Eastern Conference-leading New York Rangers. The Devils (26-19-2) lost for the second straight time in the middle of a six-game homestand.

Hartnell scored in the second and third periods. Simmonds assisted on Hartnell's first goal and on Matt Read's second-period tally, and then added an empty-netter. Ilya Bryzgalov made 30 saves to earn his 18th win of the season.

The Flyers lost forward Jaromir Jagr to an undisclosed lower body injury in the first period.

Alexei Ponikarovsky, in his Devils debut, scored New Jersey's lone goal. Ponikarovsky was acquired Friday in a trade with Carolina.

DUCKS 2, SENATORS 1

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Jonas Hiller made 31 saves, Corey Perry scored, and Lubomir Visnovsky was credited with a goal that Ottawa's Erik Karlsson knocked into his own net during Anaheim's victory.

The Ducks (17-22-7) are 7-0-1 in their last eight and 10-9-3 since Bruce Boudreau took over for fired coach Randy Carlyle on Nov. 30.

Craig Anderson made 27 saves for the Senators, who got their only goal at 8:51 of the third period. Chris Neil, playing in his 700th NHL regular-season game, converted his own rebound.

Ottawa, which lost for the third time in 13 games, had earned at least one point in a club-record, 11 straight road games.

CANUCKS 4, SHARKS 3

VANCOUVER (AP) — Cody Hodgson scored his second goal of the game with 4:17 left, and Vancouver beat San Jose.

Ryan Kesler and David Booth also scored for Vancouver (29-15-4), which is 1-1-1 halfway through its six-game homestand.

Logan Couture scored a short-handed goal and added a power-play tally, and Dan Boyle also had a goal for the depleted Sharks (26-14-5), who were without top-six forwards Martin Havlat (hamstring) and Ryane Clowe (facial injury) and lost their second straight.

With the game tied 2-2 late in the third period, the teams combined for three goals in a span of 1:32.

ISLANDERS 2, HURRICANES 1, OT

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) — John Tavares scored his second goal of the game 3:58 into overtime, and the New York Islanders beat Carolina for their third straight win.

Tavares scored his 19th goal of the season after extending his career-best point streak to 12 games with a second-period goal. Tavares has eight goals and 13 assists during his streak, the longest in the NHL this season.

Evgeni Nabokov stopped 32 shots for the Islanders (19-21-6), who have won four of five and five of seven. It was also the fourth straight win for Nabokov, a season high for Islanders goalies.

Jeff Skinner gave Carolina a 1-0 lead in the first period.

New York has allowed only four goals in four games.

PANTHERS 4, JETS 3, SO

WINNIPEG (AP) — Kris Versteeg scored two goals and added an assist for Florida, which snapped an eight-game, road-losing streak with a shootout win over Winnipeg.

Mikael Samuelsson scored the Panthers' winning goal of the shootout, which used 14 skaters. Mike Santorelli also scored in regulation for Florida (22-15-10), which also ended a four-game skid.

Winnipeg (22-20-6) got two goals from Nik Antropov, Alexander Burmistrov added one, and Kyle Wellwood had two assists.

Scott Clemmensen stopped 41 shots for the win. Winnipeg's Ondrej Pavelec made 23 saves.

PREDATORS 5, BLACKHAWKS 2

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Sergei Kostitsyn, Kevin Klein and Patric Hornqvist each had a goal and an assist to help Nashville beat Chicago.

The Predators have won seven of eight and 10 of 12. Nashville also ended Chicago's winning streak at three. The Blackhawks had earned points in seven straight games.

Craig Smith and Colin Wilson also scored, and Pekka Rinne made 20 saves for Nashville. Rinne has won seven in a row and 10 of 11.

Marian Hossa scored twice for Chicago. He has five points in two games against Nashville this season.

CANADIENS 3, MAPLE LEAFS 1

TORONTO (AP) — Carey Price made 32 saves, and Rafael Diaz and Lars Eller scored third-period goals in Montreal's victory over Toronto.

Rene Bourque also scored for the Canadiens, who lost at Pittsburgh on Friday night.

Matthew Lombardi scored for the Maple Leafs.

LIGHTNING 4, COYOTES 3

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Steven Stamkos scored his NHL-leading 32nd goal, Martin St. Louis and Steve Downie each had a goal and an assist, and Tampa Bay beat Phoenix for its third straight victory.

Dwayne Roloson made 33 saves and improved to 7-10-2 with his first win since Nov. 17 against Pittsburgh.

Teddy Purcell also scored for Tampa Bay.

Lauri Korpikoski, Keith Yandle and Ray Whitney scored for Phoenix.
