Tyler Seguin had the deciding goal in the shootout and Ales Hemsky scored twice in regulation as the streaking Dallas Stars edged the Calgary Flames 4-3 on Wednesday for their seventh win in eight games.
Seguin's shot past Karri Ramo was the only one to go into the net in the shootout. Stars goaltender Kari Lehtonen was perfect against Joe Colborne, Johnny Gaudreau and Sean Monahan.
Jamie Benn also scored for Dallas (36-28-10), which climbed within six points of the Winnipeg Jets, who hold the second wild-card spot in the Western Conference.
Deryk Engelland, with his first two goals of the season, and Johnny Gaudreau scored for Calgary (40-27-7).
The Flames remain in third in the Pacific Division, one point up on idle Los Angeles, who sit outside of a playoff spot. The Kings have a game in hand.
Down 3-2 headed to the third period, Calgary got the only goal as Engelland scored his second of the night. The defenceman, who also tied the game 2-2 in the second period, got the puck at the blue-line and sent a floater towards the net that found the top corner.
Engelland's first career two-goal game came after he had gone without a goal in his last 77 games dating back to last season.
Dallas took a 3-2 lead with 16 seconds left in the second period.
With the teams playing four aside, Shawn Horcoff carried the puck up ice on a two-on-one. The veteran hung onto the puck patiently then set up Hemsky near the far post for an open net.
Trailing 2-0 in the second period, Calgary cut the deficit in half when Gaudreau slipped a shot through the pads of Lehtonen at 12:44. It was Gaudreau 21st goal. He leads NHL rookies in scoring with 58 points.
The goal sparked the Flames, who drew even less than two minutes later on Engelland's wrist shot from the blue-line.
Dallas took a 1-0 lead 47 seconds into the second period when Hemsky crossed over the blue-line and beat Ramo with a wrist shot to the top corner.
Jason Spezza set up Benn on a power play for an easy tap-in at 10:47 to put the visitors up 2-0.
Lehtonen finished with 31 saves to improve to 33-14-10. Ramo had 27 saves to fall to 15-8-3.
