The University of New Brunswick was named the top seed of the CIS men's hockey championship Sunday, a six-team tournament which the Varsity Reds are hosting.

The McGill Redmen are ranked second, followed by the No. 3 Alberta Golden Bears, No. 4 Western Ontario Mustangs, No. 5 St. Francis Xavier X-Men and the No. 6 Calgary Dinos.

UNB, Western and Calgary will play in Pool A in the preliminary round, while McGill, Alberta and the X-Men skate in Pool B. The first-place finishers from each group will play in the final for the Cavendish University Cup.

Play begins on Thursday with the Redmen and X-Men facing each other in the afternoon, while UNB and the Dinos play later that night.

The Bears and Mustangs take the ice on Friday against the losing teams from opening day.
