The current labour strife in the NHL offered us the perfect opportunity to use our imaginations and envision the league in a whole new light. What if we blew the whole thing up and started again with a 12-team league – six Canadian franchises in one division and six American teams in the other – with general mangers choosing the best 23-man roster possible? We assembled a group of hockey writers from the Globe and Mail and beyond to partake in the ultimate fantasy draft. There would be no salary cap restrictions, just a straight draft from a pool of every NHL player to build the best team possible. Below are the results of the selection process, with a few words from each GM on their draft strategy and an evaluation from Globe and Mail columnist Eric Duhatschek. Which team has the best shot at winning a Stanley Cup in our re-imagined NHL? We turn that decision over to you. Take a look at the rosters below and vote for which team you think would have the best shot at raising the most famous trophy in sports at the end of the season.
