Yves Hamelin is moving west to take over as director of the Olympic Oval in Calgary after years of overseeing the national short-track team in Montreal.

Hamelin, whose son Charles is a winner of three Olympic gold medals in short track, will start his new job July 14 at the Oval, according to an announcement on the University of Calgary website.

The short-track team won eight Olympic and 40 world championship medals during the eight years Hamelin was Speed Skating Canada’s short-track director.

Canada’s long-track team is based at the Oval in Calgary.

The long-track team won just two medals at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi after winning five in 2010 and eight in 2006.
