Canada's Aleksandra Wozniak is out of the U.S. Open after a first-round loss to American Christina McHale on Monday.

The native of Blainville, Que., fell 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-4.

After dropping the first set, Wozniak fought back from 6-5 down to win the second set in a tiebreak.

Wozniak had two-game lead in third set but McHale broke her in the third game, then built a 5-3 lead.

Wozniak made it 5-4, but with McHale serving for the win the American made no mistake. Up 40-love, McHale engaged the Canadian in a rally before Wozniak fired into the net to end the game.

McHale will face eighth seed Marion Bartoli of France in the second round.

Wozniak qualified for the women's main draw with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Israel's Julia Glushko on Friday.
