Unseeded Jeremy Chardy upset John Isner 6-7 (9), 7-6 (13), 7-6 (4) in a rain delayed quarter-final at the $4.1-million (U.S.) men's Rogers Cup on Friday.

Chardy advanced to a semi-final against the winner of a later match between top-seeded Novak Djokovic and qualifier Ernests Gulbis.

The match began nearly two hours later because of rain and was interrupted in the second set by another shower.

The 6-foot-10 Isner, who won a tournament two weeks ago in Atlanta and reached the final last week in Washington, D.C., had won 11 of his previous 12 matches.

Other quarter-finals later Friday have Rafael Nadal against Kei Nishikori and defending champion Jo-Wilfried Tsonga facing Andy Murray.

In doubles, Toronto's Daniel Nestor and partner Edouard Roger-Vasselin advanced to the semi-finals with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Nenad Zimonjic and Marcin Matkowski.

Serena Williams has won the first three Grand Slams of the season and will be a good bet to make it a Grand Slam sweep at the U.S. Open if her play at this week's Rogers Cup is any indication. She continued her run of strong form Friday night with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Roberta Vinci.

The 33-year-old American was usually up to the challenge, eventually wrapping things up in a tidy 78 minutes. Williams will next face the winner of the late quarter-final between rising Swiss star Belinda Bencic and fifth-seeded Ana Ivanovic of Serbia.

Earlier in the day, second-seeded Simona Halep recovered from a slow start for a 0-6, 6-3, 6-1 win over sixth-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland. Halep will face 15th-seeded Sara Errani of Italy, who held off Ukrainian qualifier Lesia Tsurenko 6-4, 6-4. It was Halep's 300th career victory.

Radwanska won the Rogers Cup last year in Montreal. Errani and Vinci took the doubles title.

The Canadian team of Sharon Fichman and Carol Zhao were eliminated Friday after dropping a 6-2, 6-2 quarter-final decision to Kristina Mladenovic of France and Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic. Fichman, from Toronto, and Zhao, of Richmond Hill, Ont., were a wild-card entry.
