Recent Wimbledon junior girls champion Eugenie Bouchard advanced to the second round at the Granby Challenger with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Toronto’s Sharon Fichman on Wednesday.
The 18-year-old from Westmount, Que., jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead and never looked back in her first match since winning the Wimbledon title.
She will next meet 15-year-old Montreal native Francoise Abanda on Thursday at St-Luc.
Meanwhile, Marie-Eve Pelletier of Repentigny, Que., won 6-0, 3-6, 6-2 over Carol Zhao of Richmond Hill, Ont., to join Bouchard in the second round.
Pelletier, ranked No. 219 in the word, will take on Russia’s Nika Kukharchuk in her next match.
On the men’s side, Vancouver’s Filip Peliwo, who was recently crowned Wimbledon’s junior boys champion, fell in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6(6), to Roman Borvanov of Moldova.
