Leading up to the 2012 London Olympics, Canadian champion Justyn Warner bemoaned his inability to break through the mark in his last two races. He knew something better was in there. He just needed how to figure it out.
He did that Saturday. And on the sport's biggest stage. Warner moved on to Sunday's semi-finals with a personal best of 10.09 seconds. He finished third in his heat behind the fastest qualifier, Ryan Bailey of the U.S.A. who ran 9.88 seconds.
"I know it's there. I knew I just had to be patient and execute," said Warner, a 24-year-old native of Markham, Ont. "My start was good, but my transition wasn't that good. I didn't change that gear like I normally do. But it will come. I just needed to get the pre-race jitters out and get that first run in. Sunday … it's just going to be a matter of putting it down on the track."
