Canada's Custio Clayton is moving on to the final 16 at the Olympic boxing tournament in London.

No Canadian boxer had won at bout at the Games since 2004, and Clayton put an end to that on Sunday, as the six-time Canadian amateur champion won his first contest in the 69-kilogram welterweight division, 6-5 over Mexico's Oscar Molina.

"All the hard work paid off," said Clayton. "I had fought him before two years ago, I lost by a point. Revenge felt sweet, it always does."

The 24-year-old from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia will meet Cameron Hammond of Australia in his second-round bout on Friday.

"It was amazing. The first step was to win the first bout," said Clayton. "I'm not going to jump into the next fight, I am happy to sit down with my coach to come up with the game plan that we have for him."
